On the price of oil Gordon Brown thinks…
“The cause of rising prices is clear: growing demand and too little supply to meet it both now and - perhaps of even greater significance - in the future. Higher demand is one of the major results of the scope, speed and scale of globalisation as Asian economies, [...]

Not only did this chocolate bar make me laugh but the website is very cool.

Oh yes. There is just a small irony in me posting a chocolate bar having written about the world food price crisis on more than one occasion.
And oh yes #2. It’s a New Zealand company.

Having collated and posted articles that variously blame the falling dollar for the increase in the price of food and the price of oil, this article from the New York Times could be a first positive sign. <link>
“After six years of stumbling against the euro, the dollar may be showing signs of getting back on [...]

Yesterday, May 2, Reuters reported that, “President George W. Bush called for $770 million in new U.S. food aid donations and other measures on Thursday as Washington seeks to stave off a food crisis threatening to envelop the developing world.” <link>
This sounded like good news, and I suppose it is, until Reuters also reported that, “U.S. [...]

Another set of experts propose another reason for the rise in the price of food.

“Much larger trends are at work. They [...]

I’m pleased to see increased coverage of, and political attention on, the food price crisis in the past couple of days. This article from the business section of The Guardian stands out for a different perspective. The article discusses the causes of the crisis and covers a report from nabCapital that maintains…
“…the sheer scale of the increases [...]

The price of food is the big developing story. Think global warming. Bold claim? Have a read.
Here is a collection of recent stories on the subject from Reuters. First a UN representative on the subject <link>.
“Jean Ziegler, UN special rapporteur on the right to food, told Kurier am Sonntag that growth in biofuels, speculation on commodities markets and [...]

This isn’t my usual subject matter but the article is worrying so I thought I’d draw it to your attention.
“The price of rice, a staple in the diets of nearly half the world’s population, has almost doubled on international markets in the last three months. That has pinched the budgets of millions of poor Asians and raised [...]
