Sarkozy and Napolean III: Is history repeating?

Reuters today reported the Sarkozy Bruni wedding <link>. No surprise there. (My previous comment on the “Sarkozy pattern” is here <link>).

What caught my eye was this comment: “The mayor said the last French head of state to marry while in office was Napoleon III in 1853.”

So I decided to find out more about Napoleon III. Turns out Louis Napoleon was “a lover of women” who had “many mistressess”. Wikipedia goes on to report, “During his reign, it was the task of Count Felix Bacciochi, his social secretary, to arrange for trysts and to procure women for the emperor’s favors. His affairs were not trivial sideshows as they distracted him from governing, affected his relationship with the empress, and diminished him in the views of the other European courts.”

Hmmm. Could history be repeating?
