50+ things being blamed on rising oil prices

The original WSJ article lists 50 but the comments deliver more and they are well worth reading as a microcosm of the oil price debate. <link>

Here’s a couple of examples.

“In America there 1200 cars per 1000 people. The world uses 86 million barrels of oil per day. In China there a 9 cars per 1000 people. They are putting 30000 new cars on the road every month. If China ever gets to 500 cars per 1000 people they will use 100 million barrels per day themselves! Get it? Your cutting back has zero effect on what’s going on….”

“Gasoline costs more because the dollar used to pay for oil is worth less. Simple as that.”

I agree with the last one. The dollar is certainly part of the picture.

Thanks kottke for the link.

PS: They didn’t include this report from the Lexington Herald Leader <link>

“A woman in Kentucky has been arrested for trading sex for gasoline.

Police in Fort Wright arrested the woman in a sting operation, where they claim that one suspect offered Angela Eversole (34) a $100 gasoline card and other gifts.

Eversole has pleaded not guilty to prostitution and doing business without an occupational license.”
