God lager & The Hedonist Shiraz

I bought both these alcoholic beverages at Waitrose today. Seems like I’m a sucker for a great name.

Here’s what the brewer, Nils Oscar, has to say about God Lager.

“Our best selling beer is an ultra premium beer which lives up to its name. For this beer we use darker malt from our own malthouse and four different hops to add more character and flavour to the beer. In addition to this we only use water and yeast. God Lager means Good Lager in swedish and that is exactly what you get wtih this divine un-pasteurised beer.”

And here’s what Jancis Robinson has to say about the 2005 vintage of The Hedonist.

The name and alcohol level on the label (14.5%) might suggest something thoroughly over the top but this wine is far from that. The hedonism comes from the pure pleasure of sipping this delightfully approachable and civilised Shiraz from the Winterfold vineyard in the hills above Willunga in the southern, more ocean-cooled sector of McLaren Vale.”

She also shares my view about the name.

“…there is such a shortage of decent wine names, with producers coming up with successively more ridiculous abstract nouns that it seems particularly clever to have nabbed a name as appealing as The Hedonist.”

If you’re interested in wine, I also run Wine Wine Wine.
